Los grandes volúmenes de datos no son sólo cuestión de tamaño, representan una oportunidad de extraer conocimiento de diversos tipos de datos y contenido nuevos y emergentes, para agilizar el negocio y responder a preguntas que antes ni se planteaban no eran consideradas fuera de alcance. Hasta ahora, no había ninguna manera práctica de explotar esta oportunidad.

Según Stefan Groschupf, CEO de Datameer, los datos pueden realmente transformar la sociedad, en las áreas de las ciencias y las humanidades pero también en los negocios, solamente que hasta ahora la tecnología para ello aún no estaba preparada.
Anand Ghalsasi, vicepresidente de ventas de Persistent Systems indica que los responsables de negocio sabían desde siempre qué tipo de información necesitaban pero no tenían las herramientas para convertir esos datos y descubrir la información hasta que llegó el Big Data. Pauline Nist, directora general de Intel Datacenter Software Division asegura que el reto ahora de las empresas consiste en integrar de verdad todos los tipos de datos, de diferentes fuentes: mainframe, ERP, SAP, sistemas logísticos.
Según Michael Kowolenko, de la North Carolina State University, ahora tenemos las herramientas para extraer datos estructurados y no estructurados de diversos repositorios, juntarlos y ser capaces de extraer conclusiones en base a información relevante que al final permiten tomar las mejores decisiones posibles para cada escenario.
Ted Bridenstine, director de Moneygram asegura que gracias al Big Data su empresa ha sido capaz de evitar fraudes por valor de más de 200 millones de dólares durante los dos años que llevan utilizándolo.
Las empresas centradas en datos superan claramente a las que no lo están. El Big Data es un dinamizador para las empresas que lo aprovechan y con una plataforma integrada de las herramientas necesarias es mucho más fácil de manejar que tener diferentes soluciones y herramientas de diferentes proveedores. El valor de negocio que supone es la clave, ya sea para buscar aumentar la rentabilidad, mayor agilidad o mejores decisiones.
